Astanga, or sometimes spelled ashtanga Yoga is actually taught these days by a person called Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore, India. He has introduced astanga yoga to the west about 25 years ago but still teaches today at 91 years old. Astanga yoga started out with the rediscovery of the ancient manuscript Yoga Korunta. It describes a distinctive system of Hatha yoga as used and developed by the historical sage Vamana Rishi. It’s believed to be the original asana practiced intended by Patanjali.

The actual Yoga Korunta emphasizes vinyasa, or breath-synchronized movement, in which one does a pose with specific inhalation patterns associated with it. This inhalation strategy is known as ujayyi pranayama, or the victorious breath, and it’s an activity which produces intense inner warmth along with a profuse sweat which purifies and detoxifies the muscle groups and organs. This also releases advantageous human hormones and nutrients, and is generally massaged back to the body. The breath ensures effective blood circulation. The end result is improved blood circulation, a light and strong body along with a relaxed mind.

There is a suitable sequence to stick to whenever doing Astanga yoga. One must move on from one sequence of poses to go on to the next. The Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa) detoxifies and aligns your body, cleaning it so that toxins do not obstruct. The Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana) cleans the central nervous system by opening and clearing the power channels, enabling energy to pass through effortlessly. The Advanced Series A, B, C, and D (Sthira Bhaga) integrate the grace and stamina in the exercise, which usually calls for intense versatility.

It’s always best to look for a trained and educated instructor to help you through this particular training. It is an intense exercise that is demanding, 6 days per week. You are sure to find inner peace and fulfillment with each breath you get.
