There are many different types of yoga mats to choose from when people are just going to a regular yoga class in their city, since they can easily carry the mat with them in a sling, bag or tote.However, for travelling a yoga mat is too bulky to easily travel with as it cannot fit in a suitcase or bag as it is meant to be rolled up and is often too long to fit in an overhead compartment.  Even if the mat is a cotton yoga mat which is normally a little more flexible for being folded in different ways, is still usually too large to fit into a suitcase or carry on bag easily without taking up the majority of the room.

Solution

As a solution to a traveler’s problem, many companies that specialize in yoga equipment have come up with travel yoga mats that people can easily take with them when they travel to different places and either do their yoga workout in their hotel rooms or by attending a yoga class in that city.  These travel yoga mats are usually thinner than a regular yoga mat so the user does not have as much cushioning as he or she is used to having, but it is a viable option that can often be supplemented by a simple towel being placed over the mat for additional cushioning.

Travel yoga mats are usually made out of a rubber material that can easily be folded into a square to fit into a suitcase, not taking up much more than the room a normal dress shirt or pants take in the case.  Although the material is made of rubber, it does not mean that the travel yoga mat has to be environmentally unfriendly, since the rubber material can often be free of any latex or synthetic materials, or even be made of recycled rubber so that it is more earth friendly.  Travel yoga mats can also be made of all natural cotton material, but these are normally more expensive to buy and are also harder to find in stores without going to a specialty yoga store like Gaiam.

In addition to travel yoga mats, there are also yoga socks that have a sticky underside so that a person’s feet do not slip when practicing yoga in the various poses.  These are even easier to pack than the travel yoga mat, taking up the room of a normal pair of socks.A little larger than yoga socks but less space consuming than a yoga travel mat is the yoga glove and footies set, which gives a pad on the palm of the hand and another one on the ball of the foot, leaving the fingers and toes bare.
